Day 16 Western Adventure

Day 16

What a day!

We began the day taking the free shuttle from Canada Place to Capilano – Rainforest, huge Douglas Firs and Red Cedars, Totems, Raptor Centre, Treetop walk, Cliff walk, and the infamous Suspension Bridge….. The whole area is breathtaking….. The original suspension bridge, was made of hemp rope and cedar planks, was built in 1889 (same year as the Eiffel Tower). Today’s version is built with steel cables and wooden  planks.

The suspension bridge is 137 m long and rises 70 m above the Capilano River below. It is definitely a balance struggle to cross the bridge as it sways from the weight of the hundreds doing the crossings

On the Treetop Walk, Douglas Firs stretch 30 m from the forest floor and multiple types of vegetation grow throughout. Numerous spiders, slugs, squirrels, birds, and more call Capilano home. The Cliff Walk goes through the rainforest vegetation on a suspended walkway jutting out from a granite cliff face.

During our walk, after taking some pics with his Leica, Todd went to put the lens cap back on, but it slipped from his hand. He tried to catch it with his foot before it slipped through the slot at the bottom of the railing onto the forest floor below, but down it fell. We could see it below, and Todd began to assess the logistics of hopping the fence to retrieve it…..……”Don’t even think about it!!!” was my response…..

For lunch we ate across the street from the Capilano park at The Bridge House Restaurant – good choice. We split the Spinach Salad (baby spinach leaves, goat cheese, toasted almonds, sundried cranberries, shredded carrots, and roasted beets with white balsamic and honey vinaigrette) and the Chicken Wrap with Yam Fries – delicious lunch!

Upon returning home and relieving our feet of the hikers to put on sandals, we walked to the Gastown area.

L1030522

This area is a fun older part of the city – unique stores and multiple restaurants in an area with cobblestone walkways, a steam-powered clock, and architecture dating to when Gastown was Vancouver’s first downtown area developed in the late 1860s. We stopped at Steamworks Brewery Restaurant for Todd to sample some local beer (I stuck to wine….).

L1030525

To take advantage of the $25 food/beverage credit per night that we received booking with our Visa, we enjoyed people-watching in the lounge of the Fairmount. I ordered a chocolate martini and Todd ordered a traditional martini. The lounge was busy with all kinds of interesting people…..

Japadog was the choice for dinner…hotdogs with a Japanese twist. We had seen Japadog featured on Anthony Bourdain and Eat St. Todd had the Okonomi – a juicy Kurobuta sausage topped with bonito flakes. I ordered the Terimayo with teriyaki sauce, mayo and seaweed. As far as hotdogs go, these dogs were unique and definitely worth a try (I know, Betsy and my mother would think otherwise….).

L1030537

Vancouver is an amazing city….multiple ethnic food choices, friendly people, a good transit system, a mix of old and new architecture, forested area, city-life, and ocean, rich and poor (never in 24 hours have we seen so many BMWs, Mercedes, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, Porsches, and Rolls Royces… and on the opposite end of the spectrum – street people begging for money and going through the garbage). All in all, we can see why Vancouver is one of the best cities in which to retire.

Three days was not near enough time to explore the city. We missed so much……, and will need to return some day…..

Day 15 Western Adventure

Day 15

We woke up to overcast, windy, cool weather. After a breakfast of fruit, yogurt, and toast (healthy, eh?), we headed out for a walk. We took pictures of the Olympic Cauldron, then we decided to walk along the Seawall Walk towards Stanley Park. Once in Stanley Park we went to the Totem area for pics and some shopping.

L1500623

Needing some exercise, we continued on the trail along the seaside. We figured we would have lunch at Prospect Point Restaurant (about halfway around the trail), but missed the turn off……so we continued walking.

L1500632

The Seawall walk is a great attribute to the city – trees on one side, the ocean on the other. There is something so peaceful about walking next to the water and listening to the sounds of the ocean.

L1030435

Cargo ships and passenger ships headed out to sea, beach areas popped up, different sea birds scurried over shells, rocks, and sand, washed up logs scattered the ocean’s edge, and a lone seal (with his Seagull buddy) were lying on a rock not far from shore (hoping for the sun to shine?).  Also…this walk was litter free, a real feat in such a big city….

L1030434

Eventually, we came to the Teahouse Restaurant (realizing we had almost completed the 8km perimeter walk around Stanley Park).

L1030441

We stopped for lunch and beverage. Mission Hill’s Sauvignon Blanc went wonderfully with the shared Big Salad (mixed greens with chickpeas, cucumber, red pepper, olives, feta, and hard-cooked egg with a cherry vinaigrette), the shared Wild Mushroom dish, the marinated Chicken Skewer for me, and the Grilled Salmon for Todd.  After a good rest and with our energy revamped, we completed the loop around Stanley Park, then walked back to the hotel.

L1030440

Once back at the hotel, Todd decided he should go for a bike ride. He did the trail we had just walked (great trail – one side for walkers, one side for those on wheels – bikes and blades). I stayed back to relax and (as Todd would say….) diddle on the computer….

For dinner we walked to Pacifico Pizzeria & Restaurant; we had passed it last night, and it looked busy. The restaurant has two floors and is an open space, so it was quite loud. We shared the Caesar Salad (good, not great), the Caprese Salad (came with only a little sprig of basil, so had to ask for more), and the Prosciutto and Arugula Pizza (good fresh flavours).

On our walk, we noticed a couple of Japadog food carts ….. remembered the name from a couple of Food Network TV shows…….need to try them before leaving Vancouver….

Day 14 Western Adventure

Day 14

When travelling, the sites are amazing, but the people you meet along the way are truly memorable.

Although we opted for the self-catering room at the B&B, the hosts invited us to breakfast on our last morning in Duncan. We were treated to an outstanding meal (eggs benedict, homemade jelly and English muffin, grilled tomatoes, and roasted potatoes), and breathtaking views (their home is in a forested area… and a deer even made an appearance while we were eating). Bill and Susie, the hosts, talked about life in the area (laid back, friendly, how the town is improving its image – I did see a “Sharps” container in the public washroom downtown yesterday) and some past travel experiences (Bill was once stranded in Bali for 3 days because he missed his flight……, I could think of worse places….).
L1500578

The ferry ride from the Island (Departure Bay) to the Mainland (Horseshoe Bay) lasted a couple of hours. It was full, but except for the cafeteria in the first hour, there was plenty of room to roam about. Todd and I mainly stayed on the top deck to take in the scenery. Although it was extremely windy and cool, it beat sitting below.

L1500601

We are staying at the Fairmount Pacific Rim (splurged) and got some perks because of the Visa we used – breakfast, internet, parking, VIP status. We are on the 17th floor and looks out to the harbour and Canada Place…..very nice views…, only thing missing is a balcony.

L1030403
Upon arrival, we received complimentary chocolate, biscotti, cocoa-dusted almonds, cherries, and a deluxe trail mix (VIP treatment…..only thing missing was wine, but we looked after that….). The room is gorgeous – upscale modern chic décor….

L1030399

After some searching on the net, we decided on Chinois for dinner. The walk was longer than we thought it would be, but very doable. The cuisine is Chinese and the décor is a modern, funky, Asian style. We opted to sit in the bar area. Todd ordered Hot and Sour Soup (lots of pork and vegetables – one of the best he has had), while I had the Wonton Soup (best broth ever – bbq duck broth); then we shared the Cashew Chicken (great flavour, not too much sauce, and lots of cashews) and Bok Choy with Enoki Mushrooms (perfectly cooked with lots of ginger). In typical Chinese fashion (food comes out as prepared, not as ordered), our soup came last….. (going with the flow…).

L1030398

While the food here was definitely worth the visit, Jessica and Rebecca were the highlights of the evening…..best friends who both work as servers at Chinois. Jessica took our order after offering some practical suggestions (splitting dishes, so as not to have leftovers). Both are interested in travelling and wanted to know about our ventures, so we started talking about travelling and sites we have seen. Jessica shared some stories of when she and Rebecca did a road trip through the southern States last year, travelling to Nashville and around. Jessica mentioned how passionate Rebecca was about visiting Nashville, as she is an aspiring Country singer.

L1030397

Both offered suggestions on other places to drink and eat in the area and some sites to visit. Both young women were super friendly, enthusiastic, and really interested in talking to us….. During dinner it poured rain outside, and although it had stopped before we left, Jessica brought us an umbrella from their Lost & Found “just in case” – Thanks Jessica ! because the rain did start again on our walk back…..
