Hawaii Oahu Adventure Post 2

HiloHattie

The store was disappointing – not at all like we remembered. It reminded us of a tourist stop as part of a tour group – lots of sale people trying to “gently push” you into shopping for jewellery, clothing, etc. While I was perusing various clothing items, Todd decided to grab a beer and wait for me. Yep, 54 years old and asked for ID – which he didn’t have (why would you need ID to shop at Hilo Hatties??)…..so no beer…..

Upon arrival back to the condo area – Happy Hour at Cheeseburger J.

For dinner we decided on Thai; walked to Keo’s (liked the name because it is Vil’s dad’s name). The place was packed and we had to wait about 40 minutes before being sat.

Pic202

The aromas of various foods wafted about and we looked forward to a great Thai meal. Nope – Mostly Thai, Coconut Island, and Ben Thanh could definitely school this place. At $7.95, the 2 spring rolls were small and greasy.

Pic203

Todd ordered the curried shrimp and scallops (plus a small bowl of accompanying rice that was $2.95 extra). The curry seafood bowl came out lukewarm, so it was sent back. The waitress said he would receive a new order, but after only 2 minutes the same bowl came back (microwaved) piping hot.

I ordered the noodles with broccoli and chicken. The noodles were like Italian pappardelle, not like any Thai noodle I’ve had. Broccoli was minimal and although my plate of food was adequately warm, the heaviness of the oil it was cooked in, overpowered all other flavours.

All in all, a very disappointing meal…

Friday, February 28/14

Wednesday, I called the Hawaii Theatre Center and bought tickets for the “Flower Drum Song”. Todd wasn’t keen on going to the theater, but he conceded (although he is adamant that I now need to eat shrimp; he is doing something he doesn’t really like, so I’m supposed to do something I don’t really like – not going to happen….). We took the bus to the theater, expecting to pick up our tickets and have some pizza that they were selling for a fundraiser (which would have allowed us early entry), but by the time we got there (bus was late and stopped at just about every stop along the way) they were out of pizza. So, we got in line….

The theater opened in 1922 and was the home to vaudeville acts, shows, and movies. The theater closed in 1984 in a state of disrepair. A concerned citizen’s group gathered the funds for a $20.8 million interior renovation, and the doors once again opened in 1996 as exterior renovations continued.

From 1997 to 2006, Jim Nabors starred at the theater for the annual “Merry Christmas with Friends and Nabors” show.

After the show (which Todd did admit to enjoying), we caught the bus back to our condo building. Still hungry (and thirsty), we headed next door to the Tropics Bar at the Hilton Hawaiian Village (a spot “The Boys” have been said to frequent). No Boys, and almost no food. We were told as we entered (before 10PM) that the kitchen was closing and if we wanted something, to head straight to the bar and put our order in. The bar was packed, so we squeezed in and asked the bartender for drinks and a menu. He got our beer, then reluctantly handed Todd a menu, while proceeding to badger him to get an order in. Prices are ridiculous – beers were $9 each, compared to $4.75 at the Ilikai (or $3 at Cheeseburger’s Happy Hour). One drink each, pizza finished, bill paid….. The end of another day in Paradise.

Hawaii Oahu Adventure Post 1

Aloha! Todd and I arrived in Honolulu / Waikiki Friday via Vancouver. The flight went smoothly – and we took advantage of priority boarding each leg because Todd’s arm is still in the sling and extra time was needed for me to haul carry-ons into the overhead. Our luggage went straight through, so we had lots of time (3 hours) in Vancouver to walk around and grab lunch (Milestone’s). Upon arrival in Honolulu, around 8PM, we immediately hit vacation mode when the 22°C night time temperature engulfed us. Easy access to taxi just outside the doors, then a 20 minute drive to our condo unit at the Ilikai (home to opening shots of the original Hawaii Five-0 series). BTW – on the lookout for “The Boys” from the new Hawaii Five-O series…..

Pic001

Condo is decent – a one-room studio with full kitchen, bathroom with shower, sitting area, king bed, lots of closet space, and a killer view from the lanai (balcony). Sunrise with morning coffee and sunset with evening drinks….ahhhh……

Pic002

The weekend brings a lot of action in the marina, otherwise it’s pretty quiet.

Pic003

So far, this first week is pretty low-key – doing some groceries, wandering into the heart of Waikiki to people watch and enjoy Happy Hour….no real agenda…. Happy Hour at Cheeseburger in Paradise can’t be beat – $3 drinks and eats from 3PM until 4 PM, then up to $4 until 5PM, and $5 until 6PM. When we were there Monday, they were (re)playing the Gold Medal Men’s Hockey game. Two young women came in and pointed to it, I called over and said that I predicted Canada would win, they laughed and liked the prediction – originally from Oakville area, they now live in Calgary and are here for a week to escape the insane cold.

Sunday we went to Duke’s Barefoot Bar. LOUD!, but food was really good. We started with a Caesar salad, then Todd had the grilled swordfish with rice and I had the mango glazed ribs…..sooo good…..

Pic005

Been to Costco (can’t beat their ready-to-eat BBQ chickens at $4.99 each) and Walmart (great deals on Made in Hawaii clothing – Todd got a shirt…). Also been to Don Quijote’s a few times – local favourite to shop for odds ‘n ends and groceries. Other than that, just totally enjoying the warm weather and the amazing scenery…….

San Diego Adventure Final Post

Thursday – was cooler (only 16°C) and the threat of rain, so a good day for shopping and taking it easy. We walked to Seaport Village to check out the unique little shops. I bought a tie-dyed sweat top, some hot sauces for the kids, and a lightweight UPF 50 hat to add to my wardrobe. After dropping of the goods back at the hotel, we headed back to Mission Brewery for Todd to get one of their sweat tops (and have some beers….).

SD901

Everyday, between 2PM and 7PM it’s Happy Hour at Beer Co. (1/2 price pizza, $3 pints), so we headed up the street for lunch (and beer….). The loaded Supreme pizza was only $6.50…. tasty and filling.

SD902

For supper, we wanted something lighter, so we opted to return to the Vietnamese restaurant recommended by my sister – Pho Xpress. It’s nothing fancy, but food is delicious (and really inexpensive). The restaurant was almost full. We split the Pork Xpress Rolls.

SD903

Todd ordered a large traditional Pho (soup with rice noodles, beef, tripe, and tendon); I was more than satisfied with a small Chicken Noodle soup.

SD904

Friday (our last full day, as we have to be at the airport by 7AM tomorrow) – The sun is shining; the temperature is on its way to the high teens. We walked back up to Balboa (up, because it is uphill) for the 4th time. Even though our passport into the museum expired yesterday, we had no issues gaining entrance into the ones that we still wanted to explore. The Air and Space Museum was interesting with replica planes (Lindbergh’s, Earhart’s and more) and a lot of NASA memorabilia (moon rocks, space suits, the Apollo 9 lunar module).

SD905

We toured the Sports Museum (dedicated to local athletes) and the History of Man Museum (Egyptians, Aztecs, Kumeyaays, Primates).

SD906

Also included in the museum was the history of beer….

SD907

For our final lunch, we returned to Prado, the restaurant in Balboa Park. We shared a Caesar Salad and the Kobe Cheeseburger with herbed fries….delicious! (Our waitress asked if our weather back home was colder than here…..lol….).

SD908

Our time in San Diego is coming to an end; two weeks have flown by. For the most part, people were super friendly, transportation to get around was easy, food and drinks were great, and weather was fabulous!

Can’t wait for the next Adventure…..
