Aloha! Todd and I arrived in Honolulu / Waikiki Friday via Vancouver. The flight went smoothly – and we took advantage of priority boarding each leg because Todd’s arm is still in the sling and extra time was needed for me to haul carry-ons into the overhead. Our luggage went straight through, so we had lots of time (3 hours) in Vancouver to walk around and grab lunch (Milestone’s). Upon arrival in Honolulu, around 8PM, we immediately hit vacation mode when the 22°C night time temperature engulfed us. Easy access to taxi just outside the doors, then a 20 minute drive to our condo unit at the Ilikai (home to opening shots of the original Hawaii Five-0 series). BTW – on the lookout for “The Boys” from the new Hawaii Five-O series…..
Condo is decent – a one-room studio with full kitchen, bathroom with shower, sitting area, king bed, lots of closet space, and a killer view from the lanai (balcony). Sunrise with morning coffee and sunset with evening drinks….ahhhh……
The weekend brings a lot of action in the marina, otherwise it’s pretty quiet.
So far, this first week is pretty low-key – doing some groceries, wandering into the heart of Waikiki to people watch and enjoy Happy Hour….no real agenda…. Happy Hour at Cheeseburger in Paradise can’t be beat – $3 drinks and eats from 3PM until 4 PM, then up to $4 until 5PM, and $5 until 6PM. When we were there Monday, they were (re)playing the Gold Medal Men’s Hockey game. Two young women came in and pointed to it, I called over and said that I predicted Canada would win, they laughed and liked the prediction – originally from Oakville area, they now live in Calgary and are here for a week to escape the insane cold.
Sunday we went to Duke’s Barefoot Bar. LOUD!, but food was really good. We started with a Caesar salad, then Todd had the grilled swordfish with rice and I had the mango glazed ribs…..sooo good…..
Been to Costco (can’t beat their ready-to-eat BBQ chickens at $4.99 each) and Walmart (great deals on Made in Hawaii clothing – Todd got a shirt…). Also been to Don Quijote’s a few times – local favourite to shop for odds ‘n ends and groceries. Other than that, just totally enjoying the warm weather and the amazing scenery…….
